3 Roulette Types You Need To Know

Understanding what variation of roulette you are playing can have an impact on your bankroll over time.

Although most spinning roulette wheels look the same, there are numerous versions of roulette available online, all with unique features and RTPs.

A traditional American Roulette wheel consists of 38 pockets. There is a zero and double-zero, as well as pockets for the numbers 1 through 36.

This double-zero roulette wheel gives the house an edge of 5.26%.

The traditional European or French Roulette wheel has 37 pockets, one less than the American version. The only difference between an American and European roulette wheel is the number of zero pockets.

Playthrough or playthrough requirements refer to the number of times a bettor must wager their bonus dollars before those bonus dollars become eligible to be withdrawn.

With all of this in mind, if you took the full $1,000 bonus and spent it all on roulette, you’d need to wager (1000 x 15) x 5 = $75,000 in 14 days. (It is important to emphasize that wagering $75,000 does not mean you deposited $75,000.)

A $10 playthrough would look like this:

(10 x 5) x 5 = 7,500 wagering requirement. (7,500 / 14 days) = $53 wagered per day

To meet the $10 bonus requirements, players would have to wager just over $50 per day for two weeks.

Roulette is an easy game to understand, and you can practice here on Roulette Simulator. The goal is to correctly guess where the spinning ball will land inside a spinning wheel.

But, if you don’t have a great understanding of all your betting options, and the odds that they payout, it can feel more complicated than it really is.

Bets are divided into two categories: Outside and Inside.

Outside bets have smaller payouts but better odds (they’re more likely to happen).

Inside bets have larger payouts but smaller odds. Let’s take a look at the different types of bets, what they mean exactly, and what payout you can typically expect for each one.

Outside Bets

• Red/Black: Bet on the ball landing on either a red or black number. Payout: 1:1.
• Odd/Even: Wager on whether the number will be odd or even. Payout: 1:1.
• High/Low: Predict if the number will be between 1–18 (Low) or 19–36 (High). Payout: 1:1.
• Dozens: Bet on one of three 12-number groups (1–12, 13–24, 25–36). Payout: 2:1.

Inside Bets

• Straight-Up: Bet on a single number. Payout: 35:1.

Getting Started: Most Popular Roulette Variants to Play

I want to detail just the top three variants – European, American, and French – before we get into unique games.

I’ll walk you through how each one works and the rules that distinguish it from the others, including the RTP (return to player rate) which indicates the house edge.

European Roulette

European Roulette is probably the most commonly played version.

It has 37 pockets: numbers 1–36 and a single zero. The single zero gives it a slightly higher RTP (around 97.3%) compared to its American counterpart.

European Roulette’s straightforward rules and lower house edge make it the most popular option and very easy to find.

American Roulette

American Roulette adds an extra pocket, a double zero (00), bringing the total number of slots on the wheel to 38.

This extra zero square increases the house edge, lowering the RTP to approximately 94.7%.

That is a significant difference over time compared to European.

For me, American Roulette is the one to avoid. It has a much higher house edge for very little extra excitement.

However, most novice players don’t understand the differences between the variants and are unaware that they are at a disadvantage when playing American Roulette.

French Roulette

On looks alone, French Roulette looks the same as European Roulette. The wheel is identical, but there are a couple of special rules for even-money bets that we need to take a look at:

• La Partage: if the ball lands on zero then you get half of your bet back.
• En Prison: if the ball lands on zero then your wager gets moved onto the next spin.

These rules boost the RTP to an impressive 98.65%. If you’re a budget-conscious player, then the slight extra complication of these rules is well worth the boost in value.

It should be noted that finding French Roulette where La Partage or En Prison rules are available isn’t always easy.

• Multi Wheel Roulette: Playtech is the studio behind Multi Wheel Roulette, where you play on anywhere from two to eight wheels at once. If you’re a fan of frenetic action, then this one is a must-try.
• Double Ball Roulette: There are two versions of double ball roulette. One lets you win if either of your balls lands in the correct slot, and one lets you win only if both balls land in the right slots. The former has smaller payouts. The latter has larger ones.
